Reading all the prescribed books during General Surgery residency, everyone knows that it is easier said than done. So it is necessary to know about few basic textbooks which are a must read.

You must have heard a very popular saying

"He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all."

So the first step to learn surgery is reading the right books and having enough working knowledge for clinical and surgical application.

Best General Surgery textbooks for Surgery Residents 

For reading general surgery, first book that comes to mind is Bailey and Love. As most of us have read it during our MBBS. But usually by the time we join General surgery residency, all the information stored in our brain evaporates. Bailey and Love is the preferred textbook for MRCS Part A and B examinations which aim to test basic surgical knowledge.

While choosing the best textbook for surgery you need to keep Surgery NEET SS and DNB CET SS entrance in mind. For MCh and DNB SS, in terms of depth of information, Bailey alone is not adequate.

Amongst Sabiston and Schwartz, Sabiston is usually the choice for NEET SS and DNB CET SS entrance. One of them must be read.

For your university exams SRB is a life saver, cannot miss its mention here. SRB tackles most of the topics from which Long notes and Short notes are asked in MS Gen Surgery university examinations.       

Bailey and Love's Short Practice Of Surgery

Good for surgery basics and UG level.

Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery 

If you want to choose one single textbook to read in your surgery residency, I would recommend Sabiston. Good illustrations and many high yield points asked in MCh/DrNB Entrance exams. Also, it is one of the best books to study Gi surgery from.

Schwartz's Principles Of Surgery

The only issue is information overload and not visually appealing.

Last-minute book for university exams.

Best Operative Surgery textbooks for Surgery Residents

Reading a separate book for operative surgery is an important but neglected aspect in a surgical residency. They are typically used as reference books. Once you know the list of cases to be posted on the next day, it is advised to read and understand the relevant anatomy and operative steps before going to watch or assist the case. Many studies show that lack of perfect knowledge of operative steps can adversely impact the performance in surgery.  Any one of the following operative surgery books can be used:

Best Books to study Surgical Anatomy for MS General Surgery (Surgery Residents)

Surgical anatomy forms the foundation stone for becoming a good and a confident surgeon. Owing to its information-intensive nature it is not always very interesting to study surgical anatomy. Continuing with my previous post (BEST SPECIALTIES AFTER MS/ DNB GENERAL SURGERY ? (PROS AND CONS) - PART 1), here is the part 2 review of various pathways for specializing after completing MS General Surgery. In this post I will be reviewing following:

Contents

• MCh/ DNB Plastic Surgery
• MCh/ DNB CTVS
• MCh/ DNB Minimally Invasive Surgery

MCh/ DNB Plastic Surgery

• Includes wide number of both Cosmetic and Reconstructive Procedures
• Plastic surgery is not just liposuction and nose jobs, it is much much more than that. Plastic surgery as a branch has a wide spectrum of procedures which includes: Skin, Hand Surgery, cranio-maxillo-facial reconstructions, Tendon Reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, burns management, genitourinary reconstructions, oculoplastic surgery, bed sore management, diabetic foot management and the list goes on
• Decent demand in large private setups, high demand in large government and semi government setups
• Usually good load of cases only in big cities
• Procedure time is usually long 
• Patients may have unrealistic expectations from plastic surgeons as popularized on television and in movies
• Easy to get the seat

MCh/ DNB CTVS 

• Usually not preferred by most these days but it does not mean that there is less scope.
• It is still a required specialty in tertiary care hospitals with many procedure both cardiac and thoracic in the armamentarium of Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. Some examples are Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), Heart valve repair or replacement, Ventricular assist devices, carotid endarterectomy, Heart transplant, Surgery in great vessels (aortic coarctation repair, Blalock-Taussig shunt creation, closure of patent ductus arteriosus), congenital heart disease surgeries, Lung volume reduction surgery, Lung cancer surgery, pleurectomy, lung transplant surgery etc. 
• Very demanding in terms of challenges of access during the surgery and the need of long term intensive care support required
• One needs to be very passionate for being a heart surgeon
• Usually the work hours are more as the teams are small and number of hours one needs to put are more
• Very easy to get the seat

MCh/ FNB Minimal Invasive Surgery 

• It is more like extension of your general surgical training
• For those who already have a good hands on in laparoscopic procedures, it might not be very useful
• Limited seats
• Good exposure to Bariatric surgery which we usually do not get in general surgery training
• Good only if taken in high volume laparoscopic surgery centers (only a few centers like GEM, Coimbatore |  Sir Ganga Ram, Delhi| Meenakshi Mission, Madurai | Galaxy, Pune)
• All across India minimal access surgery is being practised largely by general surgeons only
• FNB and Mch MAS at AIIMS are only two courses in India which are recognised by medical council for Minimal Access surgery
• Adoption of Robotic Minimal Access surgery is still in its nascent stages in India, you will require additional training separately

So to conclude, I would say that all specialties have some good things and some bad things. There are some which are in high demand in the job market for freshers, but in the long term, more or less, all specialties offer good scope for talented and deserving surgeons. 

The key to success is always dependent on the amount of interest you take and the amount of hard work you put into nurturing your surgical skills. It also depends on the right choice of institute to work in and an optimal match between the demand of the specialty that you choose and number of doctors already offering those services in your city.

There is definitely no comparison between Bailey and Love vs. Washington's manual of surgery. Both books have a completely different purpose.

Purpose of reading Bailey and Love Surgery

• Master textbook followed by most of the competitive exams, so it is a must read if you are aiming for NEET PG preparation, MRCS preparation and NEET superspecialty preparation 
• It covers all topics very well and is easy to read and understand. It is a good book for concept building
• Most MCQs from general surgery coming in competitive exams are made from Bailey and Love
• Even after joining MS General surgery, Bailey and Love is very useful 

Purpose of reading Washington's Manual of Surgery

• Washington's manual of surgery is a review book with current guidelines, it assumes that you are already clear with your concepts of general surgery. So it just gives you a path to manage a specific clinical condition.
• It is a good book to be used as a "pocket manual" while in general surgery postings or rotations to quickly review theoretical information and clinical guidelines regarding a particular case.

My Take: Washington's Manual of Surgery can just be used as a supplement to Bailey and Love rather than a sole book to rely on.
