There is definitely no comparison between Bailey and Love vs. Washington's manual of surgery. Both books have a completely different purpose.

Bailey and Love Surgery

Purpose of reading Bailey and Love Surgery

Purpose of reading Washington's Manual of Surgery

  • Washington's manual of surgery is a review book with current guidelines, it assumes that you are already clear with your concepts of general surgery. So it just gives you a path to manage a specific clinical condition.
  • It is a good book to be used as a "pocket manual" while in general surgery postings or rotations to quickly review theoretical information and clinical guidelines regarding a particular case.

My Take: Washington's Manual of Surgery can just be used as a supplement to Bailey and Love rather than a sole book to rely on.

Following are the pros of reading Bailey and Love:

Following are the cons for reading Bailey and Love:
  • The only downside I can think of is that things are not given in point wise manner, the way we have to write Long notes and short notes in university exams. There are no separate subheadings like introduction, clinical features, investigations and management. Usually everything is given in paragraphs and you have to sort things out to remember or make notes.
  • In this aspect SRB is better and makes it easier for you to revise, but it stresses more towards facts than concepts.
My take: If you are serious about PG preparation and MRCS preparation in future and if you are able to make notes or use marker pen for Annotations on Bailey, then it is the book of choice. Otherwise you can go for SRB.
